Step-by-step: connecting a machine
This guide shows step-by-step how to connect a machine: from the configuration of the device to the first measured values in the chart and the first process in the process analysis. As an example, it uses a milling center with the name Milling Center 04 and the technical ID demo-mc-04. Replace these values with the names of your machine.

Step 1: Plan the identifiers
The Smart Operations Toolkit assigns incoming data by name. Decide which names the machine or connector sends:
| Identifier | Example | Used as |
|---|---|---|
Technical ID of the device |
|
|
Names of the measured values |
|
|
Names of the process curves |
|
|
| Use stable technical IDs that do not change when a machine is moved or renamed. The display name of the device can be changed at any time. |
Step 2: Configure the device
In the menu, click Configuration and create in this order:
-
Measuring points for all values that the machine sends. See Measuring points.
-
A device type with these measuring points. See Device types.
-
The device with the technical ID, the device type and the facility. See Devices.
Alternatively, ask the agent:
Create the measuring points temperature (°C), rotation-speed (rpm) and coolant-pressure (bar), a device type Milling Center MC-500 with these measuring points, and the device Milling Center 04 with the technical ID demo-mc-04 in the facility Line 1.
For automated set-up, use the master data API.
Step 3: Get a technical client
Ask your administrator for a technical client with the permission measurements:write and request an access token. See Authentication.
Step 4: Send measured values
curl -X POST "https://<sot-host>/data-ingest/api/v1/tenants/<tenant>/ingest" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "X-Message-Type: measurement" \
-H "X-Api-Version: 1.0" \
-d '{
"reference": { "identifier": "demo-mc-04", "type": 0 },
"measurementTimeSeries": [
{
"name": "temperature",
"firstSampleTimestamp": "2026-10-16T10:00:00Z",
"timeOffsets": [0, 1000, 2000],
"values": [47.2, 47.5, 48.1],
"measurementUnit": "°C"
}
]
}'
The service answers with 202 Accepted.
See Sending measured values for the complete message format.
Step 5: Send process data
If the machine produces parts and records process curves, send one message per process with X-Message-Type: process. See Sending process data.
Step 6: Check the result
-
In the menu, click Devices and open Milling Center 04.
-
Check the Measurement Chart. Select a time range that contains the timestamps you sent.
-
Check the Process Analysis for process data.

Messages are processed asynchronously. Wait a few seconds and refresh. |
Step 7: Watch the data
-
Create rules for the new device, for example with the agent:
Create an upper bound rule for temperature on Milling Center 04: warning above 80, error above 90.See Monitoring with rules. -
Events of the rules are shown in the device details and can be sent as email notifications. See Email notifications.

Schritt 3: Technischen Client anfordern
Siehe Authentifizierung.
Schritt 4: Messwerte senden
curl -X POST "https://<sot-host>/data-ingest/api/v1/tenants/<tenant>/ingest" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "X-Message-Type: measurement" \
-H "X-Api-Version: 1.0" \
-d '{
"reference": { "identifier": "demo-mc-04", "type": 0 },
"measurementTimeSeries": [
{
"name": "temperature",
"firstSampleTimestamp": "2026-10-16T10:00:00Z",
"timeOffsets": [0, 1000, 2000],
"values": [47.2, 47.5, 48.1],
"measurementUnit": "°C"
}
]
}'
Der Dienst antwortet mit 202 Accepted.
Das vollständige Nachrichtenformat beschreibt Messwerte senden.
Schritt 5: Prozessdaten senden

Siehe E-Mail-Benachrichtigungen.
